Born on Ban Jelačić Square: The History of Zagrebačka Pivovara

Zagrebačka Pivovara was born of simple arithmetic: by the early 1890s, Zagreb’s brewers could no longer keep up with a fast-growing city’s thirst. On 19 May 1892, the founding assembly of Zagrebačka Pivovara was held as a joint-stock company in the premises of the Croatian Eskompt Bank on Ban Jelačić Square — the very heart of Zagreb. The brewery opened its doors with a ceremony on 12 July 1893.

That same year, 1893, the brewery began producing the lager that would define it: Ožujsko pivo. The name honours ožujak (March), the last month of the traditional brewing season when beer could still be cold-fermented before the summer heat — a little piece of pre-refrigeration brewing history on every label.

Through the twentieth century the brewery grew alongside its city, and since June 2012 Zagrebačka Pivovara has been part of the Molson Coors group, operating within Molson Coors Europe. International ownership hasn’t dented local devotion: Ožujsko remains Croatia’s best-selling beer, with a market share of roughly 40%.
