Pivovara Medvedgrad

Bok! When it comes to the history of craft beer in Croatia, one name stands above the rest as the true originator: Pivovara Medvedgrad. Founded in 1994 — when the concept of “craft brewing” was barely registering in most of Europe — Medvedgrad had the vision to open Zagreb’s first brewery-restaurant and the talent to make it extraordinary.

Named after the medieval fortress that towers over Zagreb from Medvednica mountain, Pivovara Medvedgrad has been brewing fresh, unpasteurised beer for three decades. Their multiple Zagreb locations have become beloved institutions — gathering places where generations of Zagrebčani have clinked glasses and celebrated everything from birthdays to football victories.

From their flagship Zlatni Medvjed (Golden Bear) pale lager to the seasonal Grička Vještica Doppelbock and the hop-forward Fakin IPA, Medvedgrad has consistently shown that great beer doesn’t need to come from a multinational corporation. Sometimes it just comes from a brewery that genuinely loves what it does — for thirty years and counting.

The Grandfather of Croatian Craft: History of Pivovara Medvedgrad

Pivovara Medvedgrad was founded in 1994 — the same year Croatia was still rebuilding from war and economic hardship. The founders had the audacity to open Zagreb’s first brewery-restaurant at a time when most Croatians had never encountered freshly brewed, unpasteurised beer from a small local producer. It was a bold, visionary act that would eventually help shape an entire industry.

The original location on Ilica Street became a Zagreb institution almost immediately. The combination of fresh, flavourful beer brewed on the premises and hearty food in a warm, convivial atmosphere was unlike anything else in the city. Medvedgrad grew steadily, adding locations across Zagreb over the years, each maintaining the same commitment to freshly brewed beer and honest cooking.

As Croatia’s craft beer scene began to boom in the 2010s with the arrival of Zmajska, The Garden, and others, Medvedgrad was already there — a veteran institution that had been doing it right for two decades. Their experience and credibility gave the newer generation of Croatian craft brewers a template to respect and, in some cases, to challenge. Today, with over 30 years of continuous operation, Pivovara Medvedgrad is the living history of Croatian craft beer.

The Taste: Medvedgrad’s Iconic Beer Range

All Medvedgrad beers are brewed fresh and unpasteurised — meaning what you drink at their taprooms is as close to the brewer’s vision as possible, without the flavour-stripping effects of pasteurisation:
