Tvrdoš Monastery was built at the end of the 15th or in the early 16th century, on the foundations of a tiny church dating back to the 4th century, during the era of Constantine the Great. It served as the seat of the archbishops of Herzegovina for generations, until Venetian forces destroyed it in 1694. The monastery wasn’t rebuilt in its current form until 1924 — but the winemaking tradition tied to the site is far older than the building standing today.

Two cellars now sit side by side: the original 15th-century stone cellar, where Vranac ages in oak barrels that are themselves a century old, and a modern gravity-flow facility just ten meters away — tradition and technology, working in parallel.
